AJ’s leftovers

At every baseball game, before AJ’s first at bat, he must locate me in the stands and wait for me to whisper “I love you” and make a heart sign before he can bat. It’s a reminder to me that, even though he’s growing up, he still needs me in small ways.

AJ has recently started a free program in the area that teaches him how to play hockey and ice skate. He has expressed trepidation about this. The following took place when my husband took him to the first lesson and I was at home waiting for them to return:
Husband: “Once he falls, he’s going to figure out it doesn’t hurt.” (because of all the padding–we don’t advocate hurting your children–sheesh!)
Me: “Maybe you should go push him down.”
Husband: “He’s on the ice and I’m not allowed out there.”
Yep. We’re bad parents. At least we’re in it together. It’s an unconventional method, but it works.

AJ tries to be stoic, but he still wants his mama there for his activities. He learned how to ice skate this week and I wasn’t there because I was ill. He asked for me no less than 3 times. Am I a bad parent for feeling a little smug about this?
